The NCLEX-RN is a professional licensing examination used to determine whether nursing graduates are ready to practice safely as registered nurses. It evaluates clinical judgment, patient care knowledge, and nursing decision-making abilities.

The exam is developed and administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, which represents nursing regulatory bodies across the United States.

Nursing graduates who wish to practice as Registered Nurses (RNs) in the United States must pass the NCLEX-RN. Many internationally educated nurses also take the exam as part of the licensure process.

The NCLEX-RN uses computerized adaptive testing (CAT). The exam adjusts the difficulty of questions based on the candidate’s performance. It evaluates knowledge across major nursing areas such as patient safety, pharmacology, health promotion, and physiological care.

The exam is delivered at Pearson VUE testing centers worldwide, allowing candidates to take the exam in many countries.

Some Canadian nursing regulators accept the NCLEX-RN as the licensing exam for registered nurses. However, candidates must still meet the additional requirements of the relevant provincial nursing regulatory body.

Preparation time varies depending on the candidate’s background, but many nursing graduates prepare for 2 to 4 months using practice questions, clinical review, and exam strategy training.

The exam focuses on safe and effective patient care, including:

• Patient safety and infection control
• Health promotion and maintenance
• Psychosocial integrity
• Pharmacological therapies
• Physiological adaptation and nursing interventions

Yes. International nurses often need to demonstrate English proficiency through exams such as IELTS or OET as part of the nursing registration process.

A structured program like IMA’s NCLEX-RN Preparation Course helps candidates review essential nursing concepts, practice adaptive exam questions, understand exam strategies, and build the clinical judgment skills required to pass the NCLEX-RN.
